Why can a payment first be in PAID state and then in REJECT status?

A payment can be in PAID status and then in REJECT status because the default message has up to five subsequent business days from dueDate for delivery by the network, as per SEPA SDD guidelines. During this time, if the debtor bank cannot follow up on the debit, the payment is upgraded to REJECT.
