The field for the payment reference has no restrictions on its length, but many banks have a limit of 140 characters. If you want to insert a reference (e.g. a GUID) for subsequent reconciliation, it is advisable to insert it in the first part, because some banks add other information further limiting the characters entered, overwriting the final part of the message if necessary.
